Dental implants are strong, long lasting, natural looking replacements for missing teeth that can help restore your smile and bite. Patients seeking this treatment may have had teeth that have been missing for several years, or single/multiple broken down teeth that cannot be saved, or could be wearing uncomfortable dentures and are looking for a more permanent solution.
At Absolute Smiles Mt Hawthorn, our dedicated Implant surgeon Dr Tony Strangio has over 25 years of experience, placing thousands of successful dental implants over the years.
Dental implants have been around for decades and proven to be a hugely popular and effective dental treatment option to replace missing teeth.
An Implant is a screw-like anchor made of titanium, which is placed into the jawbone and allowed to fuse over time, providing a strong foundation for a crown to be attached to replace the missing tooth. Dental implants can range from a single tooth, to multiple teeth or even full mouth implants.
Not everyone is a candidate for dental implants. The main factors that affect the suitability of placing an implant include:
– Adequate bone levels and quality
– Healthy gums (periodontal health)
– Underlying medical conditions (eg: diabetes)
– Lifestyle habits (smoking and oral hygiene habits)
Following a thorough clinical assessment, 3D bone scan imaging and planning, the titanium implant is surgically placed into the jawbone (usually under sedation).
The implant is left to heal and fuse under the gum for a period of approximately 12 weeks.
The implant is then exposed and an attachment called an “abutment” is then fitted to the top of the implant and the gum allowed to heal around it for approximately 2 weeks.
Impressions are taken of the area to create an implant crown.
The implant crown is fitted 2 weeks later.
** Cases requiring multiple implants, bone grafting or prior teeth extractions will vary in terms of procedure timing, length of healing and final teeth fittings. This will all be discussed in detail with our Implant surgeon.
– Dental implants look and feel extremely natural
– They are anchored in the mouth and do not need to be removed like dentures
– Being made of titanium and ceramic, they are highly bio-compatible and long lasting.
– They can restore function to the mouth, making it much easier to chew and even speak.
– Are easy to care for as they mimic a natural tooth
– Can greatly improve a patients confidence by restoring the smile
Implants, when cared for correctly, can last for decades. It is essential to follow up with regular check ups and cleans at the dentist to maintain the health and integrity of your implant.
Implants are a highly individual procedure with many factors affecting treatment, such as bone volume, bone quality and the need for prior grafting or teeth extractions. A single tooth implant starts at approximately $5500 and is usually partly claimable on Private Health Insurance. A comprehensive quote will be provided once a consultation has been carried out.
Depending on the number of implants, the complexity of treatment and the need for bone grafting, recovery after implant surgery can range anywhere from 24-48 hours, up to a week or more.
Like any other surgical procedure, Dental implant surgery carries its own set of risks. Implant failure can occur where the body rejects the implant, and is highest in smokers and diabetic patients. Infection can also occur following the procedure, as well as potential sinus issues and damage to nerves around the surgery site (paraesthesia). All risks will be assessed and discussed in detail on a case by case basis.
